The Ford Crown Victoria has held the honor of being the number one car used by police departments in the US. But that may change with the introduction of the new sporty Dodge Charger. The Charger’s speed and handling have caught their attention.

“We’ve been steadily gaining market share and acceptance for the police vehicle since its inception,” said Shawn Morgan, Chrysler LLC spokeswoman. “We see that trend continuing.”

The Charger equipped with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine posted the highest top speed, fastest acceleration and some of the shortest braking distances. Ford still has 80% of the police car market, but their sales have been flat.
