Truck hijackings rose 53,3%, robberies of businesses 29,3% and of houses 7% between April and September, according to crime statistics which Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula released in Pretoria yesterday.

Assistant Commissioner of Information Management Chris de Kok said truck hijacking had become a highly organised crime, like cash-in-transit robberies.

House robberies did fall in Gauteng, however, prompting Nqakula to give credit to the Provincial Commissioner Perumal Naidoo, who was present for the announcement.
